Abstract
Motor vehicle and motorcycle Repair and Maintenance Workshop Survey, 2015 is a National level sample survey. This is an establishment based survey which encompasses the activities of both motor vehicle and motorcycle repair and maintenance workshop during reference period. The main objective of the survey was to update the contribution of motor vehicle and motorcycle service centers in national economy of Nepal. The specific objectives of the survey were:
1. To identify the current size, nature and distribution of motor vehicle and motorcycle service centers.
2. To analyze the economic activities related to employment, investment of fixed capital, financial transaction, etc.
3. To find out the information of waste management of this sector.
4. To obtain information of main problems faced by this sector while conducting their repair and maintenance services.

Notes
The survey of motor vehicle and motorcycle repair and maintenance workshop covers the activities define in ISIC 2008, section G (Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles), division 45 (Wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles), groups 452 (Maintenance and repair of motor vehicles) and 454 (Sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and related parts and accessories).Theoretically this survey covers workshop, maintenance center, garage, service centers currently operating and legally registered in any government body. The reference period of the survey for all the economic activities was the fiscal year 2014 (2071-72). For number of employees, the reference day is the 1st Magh 2071 BS.
In this survey, the maintenance of motor vehicle and motorcycle refers to the following types of services:
-Maintenance of machine,
-Maintenance of electronic equipment of motor vehicle and motorcycle,
-Maintenance of body and body parts of vehicles,
-Washing, polishing and painting,
-Maintenance of tyres and tubes,
-Servicing of motor vehicle and motorcycle,
-Maintenance of seat,
-Maintenance of door and window of motor vehicle, etc.

The survey covers all motor vehicle and motorcycle repair and maintenance workshops operating in the country and registered in any government body during the referance period. The survey excludes such type of workshops whose main work was tyre resoling or retreading, making new body of motor vehicle, selling parts of motor vehicle and motorcycle and repairing of cycle or other non mechanical vehicles.

Sampling Procedure
The Survey covers the motorcycle and motor vehicles service centers all the country. Altogether 1230 establishments were selected for the survey. There were 6 administrative domains consisting of each province from 1 to 5 and provinces 6 and 7 were merged to form a single domain. There were 2 strata each from the motor vehicle repair and maintenance workshops and the motorcycle repair and maintenance workshops. Altogether 12 groups were formed to select the establishments using PPS (Probability Proportional to Size) sampling technique where numbers of employees were the measure of size.

Supervision
Interviewing was conducted by enumerators of selected statistics offices and districtwise supervision was done by statistics officers in their respective districts. Central level supervision was also conducted by the staff of Central Bureau of Statistics.

Questionnaires

Questionnaires
A paper based questionnaire was used to collect the information about the service centers of motor vehicle and motorcycle. The establishment based questionnaire includes various subsections such as type of employment by age and sex,salary and wages, operating expenditure, other expenditure, income, financial transaction, stocks, fixed capital, waste management, social security and main problems. The questionnaires were developed in Nepali.

Data editing took place at a number of stages throughout the processing, including:
a) Office editing and coding
b) During data entry
c) Completeness
d) Consistency checking
e) By visual control of the questionnaire
f) Secondary editing
g) Structural checking of STATA data files
Other Processing
Data entry was conducted by the staff of Trade Statistics Section in CBS. All data entry was conducted at the CBS using CSPro with a highly structured data entry program, using system controlled approach that controlled entry of each variable. All range checks and skips were controlled by the program and operators could not override these. A limited set of consistency checks were also included in the data entry program. After completion of all processing in CSPro, all individual cluster files were backed up before concatenating data together using the CSPro file concatenate utility. For tabulation and analysis STATA versions 11.0 was used.
