| Abstract |
To address a significant data gap regarding non-governmental educational institutions in Nepal, the National Statistics Office conducted the Nepal Educational Institutions Survey, 2081 (Reference Year: FY 2080/81). The survey covered non-governmental pre-primary, basic, secondary, technical-vocational, and higher education institutions to evaluate their structure, employment, enrollment, and contribution to the national economy.
Key Findings
Institutional Scope: A total of 10,411 non-governmental institutions operate nationwide, with the highest concentration in Bagmati Province (2,903) and the lowest in Karnali Province (375). Pre-primary and basic levels constitute 43% of these institutions, followed closely by secondary education at 41%.
Economic Impact: The sector generated a Gross Output of approximately NPR 195 billion and contributed NPR 160 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the economy, backed by NPR 309 billion in cumulative fixed capital investments.
Workforce & Enrollment: The sector engages 311,516 individuals, with 300,021 working as paid employees (74% teaching, 26% non-teaching). Total student enrollment reached 3.741 million across all tiers, heavily concentrated in school-level education.
Operational Costs & Fees: The national average annual operational cost per institution is NPR 12.2 million (highest in Bagmati at NPR 21.2 million). The national average monthly tuition fee is NPR 3,300, while the average monthly staff salary is NPR 16,300.
The primary bottlenecks reported by institutions include fluid or unstable policy governance (71%), financial constraints and fee-collection delays (42%), and student dropouts. Notably, higher education and technical institutions face critical challenges due to declining domestic enrollment driven by a rising wave of students moving abroad. |
