Realizing the importance of livestoch data, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD) and Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) have jointly conducted a Commercial Livestock Integrated Survey (CLIS), 2021 based on the framework of the 50x2030 Initiative to close the agricultural data gap, receiving technical assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and financial support from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).\nThe nationwide livestock survey focused on medium and large commercial livestock farms based on specific thresholds of animals raised by livestock type. The main objective of this survey is to measure key indicators related to size and characteristics of livestock along with economic, social and technical dimensions of the commercial livestock farms. In addition, it has collected key data necessary to assess the impact of livestock activities on the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the farming. The CLIS 2021 has provided statistically representative estimates at national and provincial level for all commercial farms.","time_periods":[{"start":"2020-07-17","end":"2021-07-16","cycle":""}],"coll_dates":[{"start":"2021-08-15","end":"2021-09-16","cycle":""}],"nation":[{"name":"Nepal","abbreviation":"NPL"}],"geog_coverage":"The survey provides representative data at national and province level for Nepal.","analysis_unit":"Commercial livestock farm.","universe":"The survey covers the commercial livestock farms in Nepal satisfing the predefined thresholds within their respective geographic location.","data_kind":"Sample survey data [ssd]","notes":"The survey covered a wide range of topics: identification and general characteristics of the farm, characteristics of the farm holders and managers, size and characteristics of livestock, area of the farm, current and capital expenditure of the farm, access to information, production shocks by disasters and weather extremes and coping mechanisms, farm labor and assets. Further, based on the Initiative's Production Method and Environment module, the survey incorporates the topics like use of natural resources, livestock production methods, access to and use of information services, infrastructure and communal resources gas and environmental issues, waste management and adaptation to climate change and mitigation strategies."},"method":{"data_collection":{"data_collectors":[{"name":"Central Bureau of Statistics","abbreviation":"CBS","affiliation":"Government of Nepal"}],"sampling_procedure":"The sampling frame was prepared by listing medium and big commercial livestock farms satisfying the defined threshhold from all over the country. The total commercial livestock farms were found to be 6486 from all 7 provinces of the country. These commercial livestock farms were classified into seven provincial domains and 10 strata by farm types. The samples were selected sytematically within each stratum and domain using stratified one-stage sampling design. The total sample size for the survey was 798.","coll_mode":"Computer Assisted Personal Interview [capi]","research_instrument":"The questionnaire used in the survey is broadly divided in two parts: the Core Module and the Production Method and Environment (PME) Module. The core module is focused on the size, characteristics and production of livestock, whereas the PME module is focused on production practices and their consequences on environment and the social and economic sustainability of farming.","coll_situation":"The frame of the survey preapred from in-person visit was validated through different layers. The questionnaire designed in CAPI mode was pre-tested before implementing it in field operation. \nThe completeness and consistency of the items in the questionnaire was thoroughly observed while designing them in CAPI mode. A two-day Training of Trainers (ToT) was conducted before the enumerator's training. Likewise, a six-day enumeraors' training program was conducted before the field operation. It provided an intensive and rigorous training along with field test and mock interviews during the training programme. Altogether 50 enumerators have successfully completed the training. A one-day virtual training was also conducted for supervisors from district office of CBS and MoALD after the completion of enumerators training.Supervision in different layers was conducted during the field operation to maintain the data quality. It was observed that about one and half hours was taken on average to complete the questionnaire. The interview was conducted in Nepali language.","act_min":"The Officials from the Central Bureau of Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, Provincial Ministry of Agriculture were assigned for the supervision of entire field work to maintain the data quality. The CAPI experts were also mobilised for the supervision of the fieldwork.","weight":"The sampling weight is calculated as the ratio of the number of total farms and sampled farms for each domain and stratum.","cleaning_operations":"The enumeration of the Commercial Livestock Integrated Survey was conducted by CBS using tablets and a CAPI questionnaire built in CSPro (Census and Survey Processing). A central database server was set up in CBS to manage the survey data. Enumerators were allowed to send collected information to the central server after the completion of interviews and once they had thoroughly reviewed the information captured in the tablet. Data processing system was centralized in this survey. The data compiled at the center server was retrieved and used for processing by the computer officer. In this survey, the CBS team had more advantage of accessing the data immediately. If any inconsistences were found in data, a notification would be sent immediately to the field teams so that field staff could confirm the issues before leaving the field. An advantage of this survey that the burden of data entry was decreased due to the use of tablets for data collection. \nThe CSPro and SPSS package were used for data management including the data editing and data cleaning of the survey. If some information was found doubtful during data cleaning, data validation was performed by direct contacting the farms through phone calls. Once the data quality was ensured, the data processing, tabulation, analysis and summarization were mostly done using the statistical software package SPSS."},"analysis_info":{"response_rate":"Only one case of non-response was observed.
